CAMPUS IS HOME TO STATE’S FIRST STATION CERTIFIED TO PROVIDE HYDROGEN FUEL TO THE PUBLICCal State L.A.’s Hydrogen Research and Fueling Facility is the cornerstone of the University’s Power, Energy, and Transportation Technology Program. The facility is the largest university-located hydrogen fueling station in the nation and the first station in the state certified to sell fuel to the public. As public transportation agencies and automobile manufacturers deploy more hydrogen-powered vehicles in Los Angeles this year, drivers will be able to count on a convenient hydrogen fueling station on the California State University, Los Angeles, campus. It is the largest university-located hydrogen fueling station in the nation and the first station in the state certified to sell fuel to the public.“This is a milestone in the commercialization of hydrogen in preparation for the next generation of electric vehicles that will be powered by hydrogen,” says Michael Dray, technicaloperations manager for the College and the fueling facility manager. “It’s equivalent to getting the first sticker from the state government to sell gasoline by the gallon.”The station is capable of using renewable sources such as solar and wind power for hydrogen production and can generate 60 kg of fuel per day, enough to fuel 15to 20 vehicles. “We are formalizing contracts with auto manufacturers so we can meet the needs of drivers who will be able to purchase the first fuel cell electric vehicles available to the public,” states Dray.Commissioned in 2014, the Hydrogen Research and Fueling Facility is the cornerstone of the University’s Power, Energy, and Transportation Technology Program. The late Associate Professor James Ettaro conceived the idea for the fueling facility in the early 2000s and had written his Ph.D. dissertation on a hydrogen power system. His contributions also created the Power, Energy, and Transportation Technology Program to engage students in the study of alternative fuels.
