FACULTY NEWSWELCOME NEW FACULTYThe College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology welcomes these new faculty members:About Mohsen Eshraghi“I discovered my interest in physics and mathematics in high school, which inspired me to look for a career as an engineer. I realized that engineering leads the way in turning yesterday’s science fiction into tomorrow’s reality,” he says.He has a special interest in computational and experimental aspects of materials science and manufacturing. “I believe that combining experiments with computer simulations for studying materials, processes, and properties will yield more reliable results through a more efficient approach,” he says.He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in materials engineering and his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Mississippi State University. He enjoys outdoor activities, reading literature, and surfing the Internet.About Sonya Lopez“As an undergraduate in college I wasn’t sure what to major in and had no real role models in pursuing a degree. When someone majoring in civil engineering suggested that the curriculum might be right for me, I tried it and have never looked back,” she says. “My passion is to teach students who are in the same position I was. Los Angeles is my home base, and I am proud to return here and mentor students.”Lopez is especially interested in the management of water resources for growing urban populations and is investigating how to use 3-D hydrologic models to assess how to effectively manage and improve water quality. “I have also looked at how climate variability can affect the local water resources in Southern California,” she explains.Lopez earned her bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles, and did her post-doc work in Colorado, where she also became enthralled with the triathlon. She continues training for the sport by running and swimming on alternate days and taking long bike rides on Saturdays.fHis research focus is on materials science, manufacturing, and computational modeling.Mechanical Engineering26Civil EngineeringHer research focus is on hydrology, environmental engineering, and numerical modeling.ffff
