About YuQing Zhu“I got my irst computer when I was 11, and I loved the Minesweeper game. The game intrigued me so much that I could not help wondering how a fun game like that can be developed,” he says. “I started to learn programming languages and found computer science more and more interesting.”Today, Zhu studies how social networks change people’s lives. He is especially interested in how information propagates in social networks. By better under- standing information cascade, he hopes to be able to better predict trends and understand human behavior.Zhu earned his bachelor’s degree in computer engineering from the Renmin University of China; his master’s degree in computer science from the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences; and his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Texas at Dallas. He was a full professor in theFire Protection Administration andTechnology program. An alumnusof Cal State L.A., Shackelford waspast president of the San BernardinoCounty Fire Chiefs Association and amember of the National Fire ProtectionAssociation. He was instrumental inthe development and proliferation ofInternet distance learning programsfor Southern California ire departmentsand in furthering the professionaldevelopment of the American FireService. Dr. Shackelford was belovedand respected by his students. He wasalso a world-renowned ire protectionacademic, the author of two textbookson ire behavior, and an advisor to thegovernments of Japan, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, and China. It was on a trip to China that he met his wife Susie, whom he considered the love of his life. He will be missed.Ray Shackelford
